The keys to success and the biggest challenges in M&A transactions
Eight Advisory's recent "Post Merger Integration Survey 2023" of 92 European companies and private equity funds responsible for more than 700 M&A deals in Europe over the past five years reveals a significant gap between the initial perception of success and the actual realisation of expected synergies. This in-depth analysis highlights the challenges and keys to success in the complex field of M&A.
William Berger, Partner at Eight Advisory, highlights the risks of M&A deals, saying: “Many M&A deals appear successful on the surface, but hide deeper risks that are often overlooked and can lead to long-term weaknesses. Cultural integration, in particular, is a risk that is often underestimated. We advocate the adoption of best practice from the outset, including a structured integration process and meticulous monitoring of synergies”.
The study reveals the key success factors for deals, including the crucial role of the leader, William Berger said: “M&A deals can offer significant returns for shareholders, but they require subtle management due to their complexity and sensitivity. With experienced leaders, the right teams and effective partners, these transactions can effectively overcome challenges such as cultural integration, while limiting operational disruption and ensuring sustained returns for shareholders over the long term.
