Transmission & Distribution in Europe: €600bn in electricity grid investment needed by 2030
A once-in-a-generation investment opportunity in Transmission & Distribution
Europe’s transition towards a decarbonised, electrified, and resilient energy system is driving unprecedented investment needs across its electricity transmission and distribution networks. Nearly €600 billion of capital expenditure will be required by 2030 to expand, modernise, and digitalise Europe’s grids, positioning the sector as a critical enabler of the energy transition and a long-term investment opportunity.
A system under structural pressure
Electrification and renewable energy integration are reshaping Europe’s power system at an unprecedented pace. Electricity demand is expected to increase significantly, while the growing share of intermittent and decentralised renewables is adding complexity to grid operations. At the same time, a large share of existing infrastructure is ageing and increasingly unfit for purpose, putting networks under sustained pressure and accelerating the need for modernisation.
Beyond capital requirements, execution is the real challenge
The European grid ecosystem is entering its most dynamic investment phase in over half a century, with annual investments already exceeding €70 billion and expected to rise significantly. Capital deployment, policy ambition, and industrial capabilities are converging to support grid expansion, digitalisation, and integration of renewable energy. However, this acceleration is also constrained by supply chain bottlenecks, permitting delays, and limited industrial capacity, making execution increasingly critical.
A unique window for consolidation and value creation
Against this backdrop, the fragmented nature of Europe’s distribution segment creates a compelling opportunity for investors. While transmission remains concentrated, distribution is characterised by a long series of mid-sized and local players. This fragmentation opens a window to consolidation strategies, enabling the creation of scaled platforms with pan-European reach. As scale increases, valuation multiples can expand significantly, offering a clear pathway to value creation through buy-and-build approaches.
