How brownfield plants can help unlock biomethane targets?
Ambitious targets
France aims to inject 44 TWh of biomethane by 2030 (PPE 3), more than triple the current level. To achieve this, plans to build new units will not be enough: converting the 1,100 existing units is strategic. These upgrades could provide up to 12 TWh per year, which would cover 40% of the additional production needed to meet PPE 3 objectives.
Optimistic momentum, but constraints remain
Conversion is gaining ground: demand is growing, supported by regulatory changes (end of BG11/BG16 penalties). However, obstacles remain:
- contractual and political uncertainties
- technical constraints
- local viability
- high costs (grid connection costs can exceed €1M).
Profitability under certain conditions: value modelling
Despite these obstacles, the economic opportunity is real: interviews with biogas cogeneration operators revealed that their revenues could increase on average by 40%. However, profitability depends on contextual factors such as heat recovery, distance to the grid and capacity threshold. Case-by-case analysis and robust financial models are therefore essential.
