The private equity trends

In this article published in the special 20th-anniversary issue of Private Equity Magazine, Stéphane Vanbergue, Partner at Eight Advisory, analyses the past and future trends of this sector.
Private equity has grown strongly and proven its resilience in the face of several crises (dot-com bubble, subprime mortgages, sovereign debt, Covid-19, global inflation, etc.). These turbulent times have emphasised the importance of diversification. Funds are now expanding their portfolios both geographically and sectorally, favouring crisis-resistant sectors such as healthcare, financial services and digital technologies. We are therefore seeing an increase in investments in Southern Europe. This market is considered less mature, has more favourable multiples and more primary transactions and offers great opportunities for buy & build strategies. At the same time, risk analyses have intensified, making due diligence more demanding.
