The Critical Role of Leadership in Corporate Restructuring

The Unternehmeredition's “Restructuring Roundtable” in Munich brought together leading turnaround and restructuring experts to discuss critical challenges and solutions in corporate transformation and restructuring.
Held at the Haus der Bayerischen Wirtschaft, the event provided a platform for industry leaders to share valuable perspectives on managing complex corporate transformations in today’s challenging business environment. It focused on key themes such as reorganisation, insolvency, crisis management, exit options, and turnaround strategies.
Johannes Steinel, DACH Restructuring Leader and Partner at Eight Advisory, who took part in the meeting, emphasised the crucial role of hands-on leadership, coaching, and motivation in restructuring efforts. He emphasised Chief Restructuring Officers (CROs) need a mix of 70 % leadership skills and 30 % consulting expertise, with soft skills clearly outweighing technical knowledge.
His findings, drawn from his many years of experience, pointed out a lack of situational leadership experience in many companies undergoing restructuring. He also emphasised the importance of clear reporting lines, financial transparency, and adequate protection, including letter of comfort and D&O coverage, when taking on leadership roles in crisis-hit companies.
